Mercantilism

European countries used colonies and enslaved labor to get raw materials. Joint stock companies turned these raw materials into manufactured goods and exported them for profit. The govornment used tarrifs to control trade and control imports. Navies protected trade, while competition caused mercantilist wars and smuggling.

To increase the coutries wealth and money by limiting imports and having more exports. (Going from mother country -europe- to colonies in the americas was not considered exporting.)
