Literacy
The skills to access, evaluate, use, and communicate information in various formats, including digital, beyond just the ability to read and write (UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, 2017).
Media
A combination of physical objects used to communicate messages; the means of communication such as radio, television, newspapers, and magazines that reach or influence people widely.
Information
Processed data or knowledge retrieved from study, experience, instruction, signals, or symbols, pertaining to specific events or situations.
Technology
The science in industry and engineering to invent useful things or solve problems; a systematic application of one's art or skill for a practical purpose.
Media Literacy
The ability to exercise critical thinking when analyzing different forms of media, enabling people to analyze, evaluate, and create messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres, and formats.
Technology Literacy
The ability to acquire relevant information and use modern-day tools to get, manage, apply, evaluate, create, and communicate information.
Information Literacy
A set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.
Techne and Tekknologia
The Greek words from which technology originates; techne means art or skill, and tekknologia means systematic treatment.
Media as Constructions
The concept that media products are created by individuals who make conscious and unconscious choices about what to include and leave out, making them imperfect reflections of the real world.
Audience Negotiated Meaning
The principle that the meaning of any media product is not solely based on the producers, but is a collaboration with the audience.
Content Knowledge
Facts, concepts, theories, and principles taught and learned in specific academic courses that are widely known and found in numerous places.
Interpretations
Ideas that interpret facts or facts that are not generally known, requiring formal documentation.
Plagiarism
Using someone else's work as one's own without giving them proper credit.
Quotations
Borrowing someone's exact words in writing.
Paraphrasing
Using one's own words to rephrase the same ideas from the original source.
Translating
The process of reworking text from one language into another to maintain the original message and communication.
Ethical vs. Unethical
Ethical refers to rules that tell us whether an action is right or wrong, while unethical refers to the act of not adhering to the proper rules of conduct.
Copyright Law
Law stating that any original tangible material with a known creator—such as written books, research, web pages, pictures, graphics, or artworks—is legally covered.
Section 193 of the Intellectual Property Code
Provision covering the rights of the copyright holder to attribution, integrity of ownership, and protection of all their original works.
Fair Use Policy
Policy that allows non-profit educational institutions and libraries to use someone else's original and copyrighted work within specific rules and guidelines.
RA 10175
Law prohibiting and penalizing cybercrime committed using a computer as a tool, including offenses like Identity Theft under Sec. 4(b) and Cyber Libel under Sec. 4(c)(4).
RA 12010 (AFASA)
The Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act (enacted July 10, 2024), which prohibits and penalizes renting, lending, buying, selling, or using financial accounts to receive or transfer crime-derived funds.
RA 282
Law penalizing Grave Threat, committed by any person threatening another with harm to their person, honor, or property.
RA 286
Law governing Grave Coercion, committed without authority of law through violence to prevent someone from doing something legal or to compel them against their will.
Cyber Libel
Making a defamatory statement about someone on the internet, penalized under RA 10175 Sec. 4(c)(4).
Identity Theft
The intentional acquisition of another person's information, penalized under RA 10175 Sec. 4(b).
Swindling / Estafa
An offense committed either through abuse of confidence or by false pretenses.
