Extracellular Matrix (ECM) (Animal Cells)
Network of glycoproteins and other carbohydrate-containing molecules outside the plasma membrane; involved in cell adhesion, communication, and support.
Collagen
Most abundant glycoprotein in the ECM.
Proteoglycan
Consists of a small core protein with many carbohydrate chains attached.
Tight Junction
Forms a watertight seal between adjacent cells, preventing leakage of extracellular fluid.
Desmosome
Anchoring junction; fasten cells together into strong sheets.
Gap Junction
Communicating junction; provide cytoplasmic channels between adjacent cells.
