Vocabulary flashcards covering the articulations of the elbow and forearm, stabilizing ligaments, applied stresses, throwing biomechanics, and common injuries based on the lecture transcript.
Radial ulnar joint
The articulation between the radius and the ulna that functions technically as a glide joint, gliding along with the ulna during flexion and extension.
Annular ligament
A ligament that essentially helps keep the radius from dislocating off of the radial nerve.
Forearm stabilizing tissue
A structure compared to a thick spider web or saran wrap that binds the two bones of the forearm together to prevent them from displacing.
Valgus stress
A force heavily experienced by pitchers at the elbow joint and shoulder during throwing, caused by contracting muscles and stretching tissue to maximum capacity to generate force.
Supination to pronation
The rotational forearm motion occurring during throwing that places a significant amount of stress on the medial ulnar side of the elbow.
MCL injuries
Injuries most commonly seen in throwers due to repetitive stress placed on the medial ulnar side from valgus forces and rapid movement from supination to pronation.
