Homeostasis
The ability of a cell or organism to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes.
Metabolism
The chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.
Cell membrane
A biological membrane that separates and protects the interior of all cells from the external environment.
Diffusion
The movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane.
Active transport
The movement of molecules across a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration, requiring energy.
Enzyme
A catalytic protein that speeds up a chemical reaction without being consumed by the reaction.
Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods with the help of chlorophyll.
Cellular respiration
The process by which cells convert glucose and oxygen into energy, carbon dioxide, and water.
Organelles
Specialized structures within a cell that perform specific functions.
