Oxidation Number
A number assigned to an atom indicating the electron distribution in a compound or ion.
Uncombined Element
The oxidation number of any uncombined element is 0.
Monatomic Ion
The oxidation number of a monatomic ion is equal to its charge.
Electronegative Element
The more electronegative element in a binary compound has an oxidation number equal to its charge as an ion.
Fluorine
The oxidation number of fluorine in a compound is always -1.
Oxygen
Oxygen's oxidation number is -2, except when combined with fluorine (+2) or in a peroxide (-1).
Hydrogen
In most compounds, hydrogen's oxidation number is +1, but -1 when combined with a metal.
Group 1, 2, Aluminum
Elements in groups 1 and 2, and aluminum have oxidation numbers of +1, +2, and +3, respectively.
Neutral Compound
The sum of oxidation numbers in a neutral compound is 0.
Polyatomic Ion
The sum of oxidation numbers in a polyatomic ion equals the ion's charge.
