Ionic compounds (Electrovalent compounds)
Compounds formed by the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal.
Magnesium cation (Mg2+)
The positive ion formed when a magnesium atom (2,8,2) loses two electrons, resulting in the electron configuration 2,8.
Chloride anion (Cl−)
The negative ion formed when a chlorine atom (2,8,7) gains one electron, resulting in the electron configuration 2,8,8.
Cation and anion present in MgCl2
The cation is the magnesium ion (Mg2+) and the anion is the chloride ion (Cl−).
Melting and boiling points of NaCl
A melting point of 1074K and a boiling point of 1686K.
Melting and boiling points of LiCl
A melting point of 887K and a boiling point of 1600K.
Melting and boiling points of CaCl2
A melting point of 1045K and a boiling point of 1900K.
