temporal integration
the auditory system’s ability to make use of and integrate information over time; can result in changes in threshold as the duration of a stimulus changes (longer duration requires less amplitude); a.k.a temporal summation; a change in threshold as the duration of a signal changes
gap detection
a temporal processing test of temporal resolution where listeners are required to detect a brief silent interval within a sound; the listener responds when he/she perceives an interruption (gap) in the sound
gap-detection threshold
a measure of the shortest interruption of a signal that can be detected by a listener; the shortest duration at which listeners detect a gap at least 50% of the time; usually 2-20 ms; pure tones, clicks, and white noise are used for it
temporal patterning
the auditory system’s ability to discern pattern differences in auditory signals
two commonly used temporal patterning tests
the frequency pattern sequence (FPS) and the duration pattern sequence (DPS) tests
resolution
separating or distinguishing into individual components
temporal resolution
the ability to detect or resolve rapid changes in an auditory signal over time; the precision of perception with respect to time; necessary for discerning speech
once a signal reaches 250-300msec
the duration of the signal no longer has an effect on intensity/threshold
frequency pattern sequence
a test of the ability to recognize signals of differing frequency commonly used in auditory processing evaluations; a listener hears three tones of either low or high pitch and must describe the pattern (such as low, low, high)
why gap detection is important
enables us to distinguish the differences in voice onset time of various speech sounds
duration pattern sequence (DPS)
a temporal patterning evaluation where the ability to identify and label changes in the duration of a sound is assessed; a listener hears three sounds of varying duration (such as short, short, long) and must describe the pattern
simultaneous masking
when the masker and signal are presented at the same time
temporal masking
forward and backward masking
backward masking
signal precedes the masker
forward masking
signal follows the masker in time
