Recovery
Process of repairing, retrieving/freeing immobile/inoperative material from the point where it was disabled or abandoned.
Field Maintenance
“On System” Maintenance replacing components; Repair and return end items for immediate use by the user
Sustainment Maintenance
“Off System” Repair major end items and return them to the supply system
Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC)
designates overall authority and responsibility for performance of maintenance functions on an item of equipment. Indicates tools/equipment needed and estimates man-hours for repair
Battle Damage Assessment Repair (BDAR)
uses emergency expedient repairs to return the system to a fully or partially mission-capable status. Objective is to sustain the vehicle/equipment until permanent repairs can be performed
Test Measurement Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE)
tests, adjusts, synchronizes, repairs, calibrates, and verifies accuracy, safety, readiness, and information assurance of weapon platforms and equipment using highly precise measurements across the physical, dimensional, radiological, electrical, electromagnetic, and electro-optical spectrums.
Modification Work Order (MWO)
an order directing that a certain part or assembly in a system be altered or upgraded. Can be issues as emergency, urgent, or routine.
Army Oil Analysis Program (AOAP)
improve the operational readiness of Army equipment, enhance safety, detect impending component failures and conserve petroleum resources (lubricating and hydraulic fluids). Monitors lubricants for the presence of contaminants, abrasive wear and tear, and the review of prescribed physical properties
Support Maintenance Company (SMC)
a modular maintenance company that provides field maintenance support on an area basis to units at echelons above brigade. Not intended as back up maintenance support for BSB. Does not have M1 or M2/M3 system maintenance capability. Found in CSSB.
Field Maintenance Company (FMC)
provide field level maintenance to the BSB and specialized low density field maintenance support to the entire brigade. Responsible for recovering their own organic equipment and provide limited backup support with wreckers or tracked recovery vehicles.
Sections of a Field Maintenance Company
MCS, S&R, Armament, ELM, NGATS
Maintenance Control Section (MCS)
directs, controls, and supervises the unit’s field maintenance mission and activities. Manager for all field maintenance and recovery mission actions within the BSA. Oversees the quality of work and maintains a shop stock /bench for shop operations
Service and Recovery Section (S&R)
perform direct support to the brigade base elements (mechanical maintenance, and automative) in addition to limited reinforcing support to FSCs. Provides welding and recovery/lift support to the BSB and other units operating in the BSA
Armament Section
provides field-level maintenance for small arms, combat vehicle fire control systems, and turret-mounted weapons and mechanisms
Missile and Electronic Repair Section (ELM)
provides field-level maintenance for radio surveillance radars, special electronic devices, tube-launched, optically tracked, wireless-guided missile systems, wire system equipment, and thermal night sights
Next Generation Automatic Test Systems (NGATS)
test line-replaceable & shop replaceable units that provide vehicle power distribution, forward-looking infrared cameras, data management, optics and sighting, ballistics solutions, and gunner’s primary sight for Abrams and Bradley’s.
M88
tracked recovery vehicle
M984
wheeled recovery vehicle
Modular Catastrophic Recovery System (MCRS)
Stryker and MRAP recovery vehicle
3 Offense Planning Considerations
Identify critical combat spares and have them ready to move forward on short notice, Anticipate increased consumption of CL IX due to substantial maneuver, Identify maintenance collection points
3 Defense Planning Considerations
Emphasize recovery and retrograde equipment that require extended repair time; consider utilizing EAB assets, if feasible, Anticipate resupply of CL IX that wasn’t available during offensive operations, Maintenance can be conducted far-forward with decreased risk
Controlled Exchange
the removal of serviceable components from unserviceable, economically repairable end items for immediate reuse in restoring a like item or weapon system to FMC conditions
Cannibalization
the authorized removal of components from material designated for disposal
BCT SPO Maintenance Section
Coordinates and integrates the brigade’s field maintenance mission and is a key element in maintenance data collection
Sustainment BDE SPO Maintenance Branch
Manages maintenance capabilities on an area basis
TSC/ESC Distribution Management Center
enforces priorities established by the Army Service Component Commands
Classification and Inspection Company (CICO)
unit’s mission is to rapidly return reparable components to the repair facility and serviceable material back into the supply system for redistribution
Recover weapon systems first
What do you recover first?
Ground Support Equipment Section (GSE)
provides field maintenance on power generation, construction, quartermaster, and utilities equipment
