Network Ports
Unique numbers assigned by the operating system to different types of network traffic to direct information on a network.
Closed Ports
Ports that are turned off, meaning access is not allowed.
Port Forwarding
The process of directing packets of information to a different address, similar to instructing a mail carrier to send mail to a new address.
Port 3389
The common port used for Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) on a graphical user interface (GUI), allowing connection to any Windows computer globally.
Unassigned Port Numbers
Port numbers that revert to a state of no assignment once a service is done using them.
