Vocabulary flashcards covering the core concepts of light propagation, transmission through materials, shadow formation, reflection, and images from Chapter 11: Light: Shadows and Reflections.
Luminous Objects
Objects that emit their own light, such as the Sun, stars, fire, and fireflies.
Non-luminous Objects
Objects that do not emit their own light and can only be seen when they reflect light falling on them, such as the Moon.
Transparent Materials
Materials that allow light to pass through them almost completely.
Translucent Materials
Materials that allow light to pass through them only partially.
Opaque Materials
Materials that do not allow any light to pass through them.
Shadow
A dark patch formed on a screen or surface when an opaque object blocks the straight-line path of light.
Reflection of Light
The change in the direction of light when it strikes a shiny surface or a mirror.
Erect Image
An upright image whose top and bottom orientation corresponds directly to that of the object.
Lateral Inversion
The perceived left-right reversal in an image formed by a plane mirror, where the left side of the object appears as the right side of the image, and vice versa.
Pinhole Camera
A device in which light rays from an object pass through a tiny hole to form an inverted (upside down) image on a screen.
