Solar System
the Sun and the planets and other objects that orbit the Sun

Planet
a large body in space that orbits a star and does not produce light on its own

Orbit
a path of an object as it circles around another object in outer space

Gravity
a natural force that pulls two objects toward one another

Moon
a natural object that revolves around a planet

Earth
the only planet in the solar system on which life is known to exist

Asteroid
a rocky object that orbits the Sun, found mostly in the region between Mars and Jupiter

Sun
Our Solar System's star that is made of hydrogen and helium gases, and supplies the heat and light that sustains life on Earth

Revolve
the movement of an object around another object. The earth revolves around the sun.

Rotation
when an object spins on its axis

Star
A huge ball of gases that makes its own heat and light

it's close to earth
The Sun appears to be the brightest and largest star because...

Mercury
the 1st planet in our solar system, the fastest planet, and the smallest planet

Venus
the 2nd planet, the hottest planet, and the planet that is closest to earth.

Mars
the 4th planet from the sun, known as the red planet

Jupiter
the 5th planet from the sun, the largest planet

Saturn
the 6th planet from the sun

Uranus
the 7th planet from the sun

Neptune
the 8th planet from the sun

The Moon
not a planet but it orbits our earth

Earth
the 3rd planet from the sun, only planet that supports life

It's the closest to the Sun.
Mercury

Gas Giants
Planets in the order part of the solar system made up of mostly gas, includes, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus

Terrestrial planets
The inner planets of our solar system that are made up of mostly rock and metals, include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars
Inner Planets
Closest to the Sun; Spaced relatively close together; Small; Rocky; No rings

Outer Planets
Farthest from the Sun; Spaced extremely far apart; Very large; Made of gases; All have rings

These factors determine the strength of gravitational pull between two objects.
Size (mass) and distance

Elliptical
Round, but not perfectly circular; the shape of each planet's orbit around the Sun

Asteroid Belt
Located between Mars and Jupiter, contains numerous rocky/metallic objects
Gravity will __________ if mass increases.
Increase
Gravity will ____________ if mass decreases.
Decrease
Gravity will ___________ if distance increases.
Decrease
Gravity will ____________ if distance decreases.
Increase

Kuiper Belt
Located beyond Neptune, contains a variety of frozen rocky/metallic objects, as well as numerous dwarf planets
