Thorax

The superior part of the trunk between the neck and abdomen.

Thoracic Cavity

The space surrounded by the thoracic wall that contains the heart, lungs, thymus, distal part of the trachea, and most of the esophagus.

Thoracic Wall

Consists of skin, fascia, nerves, vessels, muscles, cartilages, and bones that protect organs and provide muscle attachments.

True Ribs

The 1st to 7th ribs that attach directly to the sternum.

False Ribs

The 8th to 10th ribs that connect indirectly to the sternum through the cartilage of the ribs above them.

Floating Ribs

The 11th and 12th ribs which have no anterior attachment.

Costal Cartilages

Cartilage that prolongs ribs anteriorly and contributes to the elasticity of the thoracic wall.

Sternum

A flat bone consisting of three parts: manubrium, body, and xiphoid process.

Diaphragm

A muscle that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities and assists in respiration.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

A condition caused by compression of the subclavian artery or nerves, leading to symptoms in the upper limb.
