1/4
Practice vocabulary flashcards covering experimental variables (independent, dependent, and controlled) and types of scientific observations (qualitative vs. quantitative) from the lecture notes.
Independent Variable
The factor that you change in an experiment to test a hypothesis ("I change it").
Dependent Variable
The factor that you measure in an experiment to observe the effects of the change ("Measure it").
Controlled Variable
The conditions or factors kept the same throughout an experiment to ensure a fair test ("Keep it the same").
Qualitative Observation
A descriptive observation recorded using words (such as colors, sounds, and textures) rather than numbers (e.g., clothing that is blue and shiny).
Quantitative Observation
An observation recorded using numerical values or measurements (e.g., a temperature of −38.8=C or a mass of 2.5g).
