Checkmate
A position in which the king is in check and there is no way to get out of check, ending the game.
Pawn
The most numerous piece, which moves forward one square at a time (or two on its first move) and captures diagonally.
Knight
A piece that moves in an 'L' shape (two squares in one direction and one square perpendicularly) and can jump over other pieces.
Bishop
A piece that moves any number of squares diagonally.
Rook
A piece that moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
Queen
The most powerful piece, which can move any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
King
The most important piece; the game ends if it is checkmated. It moves one square in any direction.
Board
The 8 x 8 grid of 64 squares on which chess is played.
Capture
Removing an opponent's piece from the board by moving one's own piece to its square.
Move
Changing the position of a piece on the board according to the rules.
Opening
The initial stage of a chess game where players develop their pieces and aim to control the center.
Endgame
The final stage of the game when few pieces remain on the board.
Stalemate
A situation where the player whose turn it is to move has no legal move and their king is not in check, resulting in a draw.
Strategy
The long-term plan or conceptual goals a player aims to achieve during the game.
Blunder
A very poor move that significantly worsens a player's position or leads to the loss of a piece.
Tactics
Short-term sequences of moves designed to achieve a specific goal or gain an immediate advantage.
Fork
A tactic where a single piece attacks two or more of the opponent's pieces at the same time.
Skewer
An attack on two pieces in a line, where the more valuable piece is in front and must move, exposing the piece behind it.
Pin
A situation where a piece cannot move because doing so would expose a more valuable piece, usually the king, to attack.
Check
A condition where the king is under direct threat of capture on the opponent's next turn.
