Physics
science aimed at describing the fundamental aspects of the universe
Science
Latin for having common knowledge
Technology
Application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes and the tools, machines, and processes used to create them
Kinematics
study of moving objects (sun, moon, stars)
Statics and Dynamics
study of how still objects start moving, stop moving, and change speeds (push and pull objects)
Acoustics
study of sound
Optics
study of light
Example of technology
telescopes led to studying the solar system which in turn led to the law of motions
Thermodynamics
study of thermal energy and transfer of heat
Electromagnetics
study of electricity and magnetism
Nuclear Physics
study of nuclei of atoms, quantum mechanics, molecules
Classical physics - when?
developed from the Renaissance to the end of the 19th century and includes descriptions of the universe
Conditions for something to be considered classical physics
matter move at speeds less than 1% the speed of light, large enough to be seen by naked eye, only weak gravity
Why study classical physics?
necessary to understand modern physics, classical still gives accurate descriptions of everyday experiences
Modern physics
the theory of relativity, quantum mechanical theory
theory of relativity
how two observers moving relative to each other would experience the same phenomena
Time effected by gravity
time passes more slowly on the surface of Earth than objects like satellites
Length effected by speed
length of an object is shorter when traveling at the speed of light, than when at rest
time effected by speed
time passes more slowly for an object traveling at high speeds than objects at rest
Quantum Mechanics
deals with the very small, mainly subatomic particles that make up atoms. Subatomic particles do not behave the same way as objects in classical physics
Scientific Method
Observation, hypothesis, experiment, theory, scientific law, collaborate and communicate
Quadratic formula
set it equal to 0
