Protists are…
Eukaryotic
Protists
any eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, a land plant, or a fungus
Protist life cycles
combine asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction

4 groups of protists
Excavata, SAR, Archaeplastida, and Unikota
Excavata
Feeding groove on one side with three monophyletic groups- diplomonads, parabasalids, and englenozoa
SAR
Highly diverse and made up of three major clads- Stramenophiles, Alveolates, and Rhizarians
Stramenophiles (SAR)
can photosynthesize, have hairy flagellum. Examples: diatoms, golden algae, seaweed.

Alveolates (SAR)
Have membrane-bound sacs called alveoli. Examples: Dinoflagellates, Apicomplexans, and Ciliates

Rhizarians (SAR)
Move using pseudopodia. Example: amoebas

Archaeplastida
Primarily photosynthetic. Example: red algae and green algae.

Unikonta
Closely related to animals and plants. Example: slime molds, tubulinids, and entamoebas
Symbiotic protists
provide food to corals, help termites digest, can cause human diseases
