Underground sulphur beds
Underground deposits where sulphur freely occurs in nature.
Metal ores
Important ores formed when sulphur combines with metallic elements.
Hydrogen sulphide
A compound in natural gas from which sulphur can mainly be obtained.
Petroleum
A natural resource in which sulphur is also found.
Frasch process
The method used for the extraction of sulphur from underground deposits using superheated water and compressed air.
Superheated water
Water heated above 100∘C used in the Frasch process to melt underground sulphur rock.
Hot compressed air
Air forced down through the innermost pipe in the Frasch process to lift molten sulphur to the surface.
Molten sulphur
The liquefied form of sulphur produced underground by superheated water and brought to the surface.
