What is IMPRESSION ?
duplication of the structures in the oral cavity (including hard and soft tissue).

Impression material:
material that is used to take an impression.

Impression tray:
instrument that is used to carry impression material into the oral cavity.

Requirements of impression trays :
be rigid and strong but not too thick (as to not gag patients)
borders should be 2mm short of the vestibular depth, no interference with soft tissues
entire borders of the tray should be smooth and rounded
handle of the tray should be angulated
What is a stock tray?
ready made tray by manufacturer in specific size
What is a custom tray?
fabricated from patient’s primary cast to get the final/secondary impression
Types of stock trays:
Metal - reusable
Plastic - disposable

Types of custom trays:
Self / light cure PMMA
Shellac
Thermoplastic sheets

Impression tray classification:
metal / non-metal ( material )
stock / custom
dentulous / edentulous
upper / lower
perforated / non-perforated
with rim-lock / no rim-lock

perforated =
with holes
excess material flows out of the tray
acts as mini locks for impression to stay on cast
rim lock =
allows impression material to stay in place
Dentulous trays have _____ shaped cross section for patients with teeth.
Dentulous trays have square shaped cross section for patients with teeth.

Edentulous trays have _____ cross section for patients without teeth.
Edentulous trays have rounded cross section for patients without teeth.

What is a polymer?
large molecule consisting of multi monomers.
What is polymerization?
reaction where monomer units become chemically linked together to form a polymer. - higher
molecular weight
Heat cure polymerization begins at…
rubbery stage - when heat is added
Chemical cure polymerization begins…
immediately at the mixing step - when liquid monomer meets powder polymer
Light cure polymerization begins…
after contouring - when exposed to blue light
Uses of Acrylic Polymers in Dentistry:
• Denture bases
• Record Bases
• Special Trays
• Artificial teeth
• Orthodontic Appliances
Custom tray using chemical cure PMMA
composed of a powder polymer and liquid monomer
polymerization happens when the monomer is mixed with polymer

Custom tray using light cure acrylic PMMA
composed of a visible light cure sheet
require a light curing unit so polymerization can happen

Custom tray using shellac
hard sheet which become soft when placed in warm water
not used anymore

Custom tray using thermoplastic polymer sheets
retainers
home bleaching trays
night guards for patients with bruxism
mouth guard for contact sports

Written on container, specified as ____ cure or ______ cure.
light or chemical
