LB Agar
Also known as lysogeny broth, it is a multi-purpose media capable of growing a wide variety of microorganisms, particularly E. coli.
Trypticase Soy Agar (TSA)
A multi-purpose media similar to LB agar, used for growing a variety of microorganisms, and serves as a base for formulating specialized media.
Blood Agar (BAP)
A derivative of TSA with added mammalian blood to promote growth of fastidious microorganisms; used to detect hemolytic activity.
Alpha Hemolysis
Partial lysis of red blood cells on blood agar, resulting in greenish-brown color colonies.
Beta Hemolysis
Complete lysis of red blood cells on blood agar, resulting in a clear zone around colonies.
Gamma Hemolysis
Absence of hemolytic activity on blood agar, typically resulting in white/tan colonies.
Columbia CNA Agar
An enriched, selective, and differential media that suppresses Gram-negative bacteria growth for isolating Gram-positive microbes.
Chocolate Agar (CHOC)
An enriched, non-selective derivative of blood agar with lysed red blood cells that provides growth factors for fastidious bacteria.
MacConkey Agar
A selective and differential media for Gram-negative bacteria, differentiating lactose fermenters from non-fermenters.
Sorbitol-MacConkey Agar (SMAC)
A variant of MacConkey agar that detects E. coli O157:H7, distinguishing it from lactose-fermenting strains.
Eosin Methylene Blue Agar (EMB)
A selective and differential media that differentiates lactose fermenters from non-fermenters based on colony color.
Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA)
A red selective and differential media for Gram-positive bacteria, differentiating pathogenic Staphylococcus species based on mannitol fermentation.
