Docker
A software development platform that packages applications into containers to run predictably across any operating system without compatibility issues, capable of scaling up and down in seconds.
Docker Hub
A public Docker repository (located at https://hub.docker.com/) where base images for operating systems and technologies such as Ubuntu, MySQL, Node.js, and Java can be found.
Amazon ECR (Elastic Container Registry)
A private Docker image repository on AWS used to store Docker images so they can be run by Amazon ECS or AWS Fargate.
Amazon ECS (Elastic Container Service)
An AWS container management service used to launch Docker containers where the user must provision and maintain the underlying EC2 instance infrastructure.
AWS Fargate
A serverless container compute engine on AWS that runs Docker containers based on requested CPU and RAM without requiring users to manage or provision EC2 instances.
Amazon EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service)
A managed AWS service that enables running managed Kubernetes clusters on AWS, hosting containers on either EC2 instances or AWS Fargate.
Kubernetes
An open-source, cloud-agnostic system for automating the management, deployment, and scaling of containerized applications across different cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP.
Serverless
A cloud architecture paradigm where developers deploy code or functions without provisioning, managing, or seeing the underlying servers.
AWS Lambda
A serverless Function as a Service (FaaS) compute offering that runs virtual functions on-demand with automated scaling and short execution times.
AWS Lambda Free Tier
A monthly free allocation providing 1,000,000 requests and 400,000 GB-seconds of compute time per month.
AWS Lambda Maximum Invocation Time
The maximum execution time limit for an AWS Lambda function, which is up to 15 minutes.
Amazon API Gateway
A fully managed, serverless, and scalable AWS service that allows developers to create, publish, maintain, monitor, and secure RESTful and WebSocket APIs, commonly exposing Lambda functions as HTTP APIs.
AWS Batch
A fully managed service that provisions the appropriate compute and memory (using EC2 or Spot Instances) to run hundreds of thousands of batch jobs packaged as Docker images across ECS, EKS, or Fargate.
Batch Job
A computing job that has a defined start and an end, as opposed to a continuous service.
Amazon Lightsail
A cloud platform offering bundled virtual servers, storage, databases, and networking at low and predictable pricing for simple applications and websites, featuring high availability but no auto-scaling.
