what is a correlation coefficient
a number between -1 and +1 that represents the directions and strength of a relationship between co-variables
strength of correlations
the closer to -1 or +1, the stronger the relationship between the co-variables
the closer to 0, the weaker the relationship
signs and meaning
+0.5 is as strong as a relationship as -0.5 as the sign solely indicates the direction
potential of weak correlations
coefficients that appear to indicate weak correlations can still be statistically significant as it depends on the size of the data set
