Vocabulary flashcards covering solids handling, sludge processing, advanced tertiary treatment, and plant operation sequences for Wastewater Operator Pennsylvania Lesson 15.
Thickening
A solids-handling stage that concentrates sludge by removing free water, reducing total sludge volume prior to digestion or dewatering using technologies such as gravity thickeners or dissolved air flotation.
Sludge Digestion
A biological stabilization process that breaks down volatile organic solids, reduces organic mass, neutralizes/destroys pathogens, and stabilizes sludge.
Dewatering
A solids-handling stage that converts liquid sludge into a semi-solid cake using equipment such as belt filter presses, centrifuges, or drying beds.
Anaerobic Digestion
A sludge stabilization process operating without dissolved oxygen in which microorganisms convert volatile solids into biogas composed primarily of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
Biogas
A byproduct of anaerobic sludge digestion composed primarily of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) that can be captured for facility heat or power generation.
Effluent Filtration
An advanced tertiary treatment polishing process that passes secondary effluent through granular media (sand, anthracite) or cloth filters to capture remaining fine suspended solids.
Enhanced Nutrient Removal
Advanced biological or chemical treatment processes specifically targeting total nitrogen and phosphorus reduction when regulatory permits require lower effluent limits.
Screening
A preliminary physical treatment mechanism using bar barriers to remove large rags and debris from wastewater.
Primary Clarification
A treatment process utilizing gravity settling to target the removal of settleable solids and floatable scum.
Solids Management Sequence
The standard sequence tracing the flow of solids handling in a municipal wastewater treatment plant: Thickening→Digestion→Dewatering→Beneficial Use / Disposal.
