VTCC Mission
To graduate leaders of exemplary character who are instilled with the values and skills essential for leadership success in service to the nation.
Primary Measure of Academic Achievement
Grade Point Average (GPA), which measures academic achievement supporting the cadet's primary purpose of obtaining an undergraduate degree.
Company Commander Focus Areas
Safety, purpose, and command and control when reviewing company operations orders.
Company Executive Officer (XO)
The cadet officer who assumes company command during the commander's absence, serves as Administrative Officer, prepares training plans, coordinates logistics, and conducts new-cadet knowledge tests.
Company First Sergeant
The cadet NCO who formally charges cadets for NJP, reads rights and appeal procedures, executes discipline on NCOs and below, leads drill and ceremony, and makes recommendations on freshman leave and passes.
Battalion Executive Officer (XO)
The cadet officer who commands the battalion in the commander's absence, supervises battalion staff, prepares the BDO roster, and reviews operations orders.
Company Honor Representative
A cadet who assists with honor training, receives reports of honor violations from company members, serves on the Honor Court, and maintains company honor records.
Honor Court Chief Justice
The official responsible for accurate processing and preliminary screening of reported honor violations before forwarding them to the Vice Chief for Investigations.
Vice Chief for Investigations
The official who conducts preliminary investigations under the Chief Justice's direction, supervises formal investigations, and prepares preliminary investigation notices for accused cadets.
Regimental Counsel
The official who becomes involved in honor cases only after the Commandant orders an Honor Court convened, providing the accused with all evidence and witness lists.
Regimental Handler
The Growley Team NCOIC who reports to the Growley Commander, manages day-to-day operations, serves as primary caretaker living at Growley HQ, and cares for Growley during university breaks.
Baseline Leadership Eligibility Criteria
Four requirements to hold company, battalion, or regimental positions: maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, maintain good standing with ROTC, maintain good standing with the Corps, and pass the most recent ROTC PT test.
Temporary-Position Nominee Standards
Requirements requiring candidates to maintain at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA, be in good standing, and not be on probation, with proposals taking effect only after Red Phase ends.
Dress A Cross Belts Sequence
The order of donning cross belts: the belt from the right shoulder to the left hip is put on first, followed by the belt from the left shoulder to the right hip.
Dress A Brass Breastplate Placement
Positioned halfway between the bottom of the collar and top of the belt buckle, aligned ROTC to ROTC with the belt put on first.
Paletot
The designated formal dress uniform for all cadets; seniors wear VPI on the right collar and service designation on the left, while freshmen, sophomores, and juniors wear no collar devices.
Service-Designation Collar Devices
Insignia designated for uniform collars: Army (crossed rifles), Air Force (prop and wings), Navy (anchor), Marine Corps (eagle, globe, and anchor), and VPI (crossed cannons or crossed sabers).
First-Year Cadet Wind Strap Rule
A strap buckled in the first hole and cut so the buckle and strap-keeper are centered on the rear hat seam; worn down only when directed or in extremely windy conditions.
Core Purpose of Grooming Standards
To establish and maintain a professional military appearance and standards of uniformity and discipline.
Class-Based Privileges Rule
Privileges earned upon completion of Red Phase that may only be revoked through the formal disciplinary process, not arbitrarily or en masse.
Hazing Definition
Any mental or physical requirement, request, or obligation that could cause discomfort, pain, fright, disgrace, or injury; is personally degrading; or violates law or university policy, regardless of consent.
Normal-Schedule Protections
Mandated protections incorporated into hazing policy requiring three reasonably spaced meals per day, at least six full hours of nighttime rest, and reasonable personal hygiene time.
Non-Judicial Punishment (NJP)
A structured disciplinary process addressing regulatory violations within the Corps system without a formal judicial proceeding.
Merit System
A system established to recognize and encourage positive performance and conduct.
Demerit System
A system established to document and address violations of standards and regulations.
Tier 1
Max 5 demerits with verbal correction/reprimand and/or counseling
Examples:
Failure to salute, falling out of ranks, incorrect or no name tags in room, late to anything, unauthorized late lights, unauthorized absence, wearing unauthorized jewelry
Tier 2
10 demerits max with verbal counseling for the first offense and written counseling as needed
Examples:
1-15 minutes late, late returning, or early leaving from any senior enlisted advisor/officer or cadet meeting
Failure to properly use chain of command
Early departure for leave/pass
Failure to properly render honors to the colors
Use of tobacco products while in uniform
Unauthorized visits to first year cadets after taps
Tier 3
10-15 demerits and formal inspection or Stand-By Inspection for a failed room or uniform inspection
Examples:
Over 15 minutes late, late returning, or early departure
Defacing pass/leave book or regulation manual
Disrespect to a cadet officer or NCO
Missing flag practice
Conduct unbecoming a cadet
Visitation violation- unauthorized personnel in dorms after hours or past curfew
Tier 4
Company of battalion offenses to be determined by the cadet chain of command in consultation with Dep Com
Examples
Allowing flag to touch the ground
Disrespect to a cadet officer/nco (major)
Disobedience of orders from a cadet or commissioned officer (minor)
Failure to stand post
Throwing any item out of a window
Unauthorized pass or leave
Falling out of a parade, review, or other ceremony
Failure to secure weapon
Disrespect to the flag
Conduct unbecoming
Visitation violation: Having unauthorized personnel spending the NIGHT in the dorms
Tier 5
Punitive articles, can result in all punishments from previous tiers including dismissal from the Corps.
The Rock
A memorial commemorating VPI alumni who died in World War I and former VTCC graduates who died in conflict; cadets customarily salute when passing within six paces.
Evening Call to Quarters (ECQ)
A designated study period defined as 1800-2300 Sunday and 1900-2300 Monday through Thursday.
Marathon Call to Quarters (MCQ)
A status during which Evening Call to Quarters (ECQ) study standards are maintained through the entire day.
Fraternization
Socializing outside your class, being too friendly with superiors or subordinates, or performing undue personal servitude.
Bud
A fellow class member who underwent new cadet training with you.
B-Pass Limits (Junior vs. Senior)
Defined limits where Junior B-Pass allows a 100-mile radius and return no later than 2200 Sunday, while Senior B-Pass allows a 130-mile radius and return no later than 0200 Monday.
Head Trainer
The cadet who plans and executes training events, scheduled meetings, and tap events, while maintaining accountability and managing members not in leadership positions.
