Examining for apraxia entails assessment of a
Variety of learned movements of the face, the limbs & the body
Conditions to assess APRAXIA
Imitation: symbolic movements, using actual objects or pantomiming their use without objects.
Command
Battery to measure Apraxia
Battery: FAST-R (Florida Apraxia Screening test– Revised)
Process: Ideatory & Ideomotor praxis
Age: +16
Time: 15 mins
What is ideomotor praxia?
The ability to perform learned meaningful movements or gestures on command
What body parts can be assessed in ideomotor praxia?
Face, upper limbs, lower limbs, & whole body
How can ideomotor praxia be assessed using objects?
Ask the patient to demonstrate learned actions with objects.
Examples: use a toothbrush, hammer a nail, kick a ball, or sweep with a broom.
How can ideomotor praxia be assessed using symbolic gestures?
Ask the patient to perform meaningful gestures without objects.
Examples: salute, make an “OK” sign, bow, or blow a kiss.
What is constructional praxia & how can it be assessed?
Ability to construct/copy spatial designs.
Example: copy the Rey Complex Figure.
What is ideatory praxia & how can it be assessed?
Ability to correctly organize a sequence of actions to achieve a goal.
Example: preparing a letter for mailing.
Ideomotor
HOW to perform a learned movement
→ “Show me how you brush your teeth.”
Ideatory
SEQUENCE of multiple actions
→ “Show me all the steps for preparing a letter for mailing.”
Constructional
BUILD/COPY something spatially
→ “Copy this figure.”
