Circadian Rhythm
A biological rhythm that takes place over a period of about 24 hours.
Sleep Debt
When one does not get sufficient sleep on a chronic basis.
Sleep Rebound
How sleep deprived people will fall asleep more quickly during subsequent opportunities for sleep.
Stage 1 of Sleep
Transitional phase that occurs between wakefulness and sleep.
Stage 1 Characteristics
Slowdown in heartbeat & respiration, decrease in overall muscle tension & core body temperature, produces alpha waves transitioning to theta waves.
Stage 2 of Sleep
The body goes into a state of deep relaxation.
Stage 2 Charecteristics
Theta waves still dominate, sleep spindles occur, high frequency brain waves, K-complex occurs.
Stage 3 of Sleep (NREM)
Deep sleep or slow wave sleep.
Stage 3 Characteristics
Low frequency high amplitude delta waves, heart rate & respiration slow dramatically.
REM Sleep
Period of sleep where dreaming occurs, marked by rapid eye movement. Increased brain activity with lack of muscle tone.
Rotating Shift Work
A work schedule that changes from early to late on a daily or weekly basis.
Effects of Rotating Shift Work
Likely to experience disruptions in their circadian cycles, resulting in sleeping problems, signs of depression & anxiety.
How to Help Rotating Shift Work
Bright Light or any way to realign ones biological clock with the external environment
Manifest content
The actual content or storyline of a dream.
Latent Content
The hidden meaning of a dream.
Activation-Synthesis Theory
Dreams are the result of our brain making sense of the neural activity happening in REM sleep. Dreams are ment to help us in our waking state
Insomnia
Consistent difficulty in falling or staying asleep for at least 3 nights a week/month.
Narcolepsy
One cannot resist falling asleep at inappropriate times.
Sleep Apnea
Episodes during which a sleeper's breathing stops.
REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD)
Muscle paralysis associated with the REM sleep phase does not occur, often leading to high levels of physical activity in REM sleep with vivid + disturbing dreams.
