Vocabulary flashcards covering the visual and demographic effects of immigration and emigration on population pyramids.
Immigration (population pyramid)
People moving IN to an area to work (e.g., London), creating a bulge in the 20−40 age group and causing the birth rate (BR) to rise due to having more young adults.
Emigration (population pyramid)
People EXITING to find work abroad, creating an indent ("bite") in the 20−40 age group and causing the base of the pyramid to become narrower due to fewer young adults.
Bulge
A outward protrusion on a population pyramid in the 20−40 age group caused by immigration of young adults moving in to work.
Indent ("bite")
A inward narrowing on a population pyramid in the 20−40 age group caused by emigration of young adults leaving to work abroad.
Units for quoting figures
The required descriptors (such as millions, thousands, or %) that must always be included when stating population pyramid data (e.g., "There are about 1.8 million males aged 0−4").
