TEST REVIEW
Network
is a group of devices that are connected and can share data and resources.
Internet
is a global network of computer networks. It connects billions of devices together.
bandwidth
is the amount of data that can be transmitted over a period of time.
latency
is the delay between when an instruction is given for transfer of data and when the transmission begins.
Jitter
is the variation in time delay between when a signal is transmitted and when it's received over a network connection. It is measured in ping.
datastream
is the sequence of binary digits that is encoded and sent over the internet.

Bob Kahn & Vint Cerf
Redundancy
is the process of backing up components/systems to prevent issues in the event of failure.
Ensuring that a network does not fail just because one or more components fail
Fault Tolerant
Fault Tolerant
No one connection failing would isolate any device on the network.
Protocol?
is a set of rules that determines how something should work or how data is transmitted and received.
Importance of (internet Protocol)
assigns every device connected to the internet an address which order and asks the sending computer for any packets that were lost or dropped in transmission. Tells the other devices which device they are communicating with.
IPv4
32 bits
Amount of IPv4 addresses
more than 4 billiion
New version of IPv4
IPv6
Domain
is a group of computers that are governed by a set of rules and are managed together.
Commonly used internet domains
com, .gov, .edu, etc
Domain Name System
serves the purpose of translating domain names (URLs) into IP addresses. When a computer tries to visit a site, the computer asks this for the IP address.
How does the DNS allow the internet to scale?
As new websites are added, the DNS keeps track of the IP address for the site by assigning it to the servers responsible for its subdomains. As more sites are added, more servers can be added to store the IP addresses.
HTTP
HyperText Transfer Protocol. is the language that computers use to request resources from another computer on the internet.
Get Request
is a request for a web page asked by a computer. The HTML document that the host computer holds is what is being asked for.
What protocols that we have discussed are used when you visit a website?
HTTP sends a GET request to the DNS which looks up the IP address of the host computer. The GET request is then sent to the host computer and the HTML document is returned.
transmission control protocl
is a protocol that breaks information into packets and sends it to the receiving computer, where TCP reassembles the packets in
User Datagram Protocol
is similar to TCP in that on the sending computer, the data is broken into packets and sent to the receiving computer where the data is reassembled. It differs in that UDP is faster than TCP, but less reliable as it doesn’t request missing packets.
Cookie
is a small data file that is installed on the user’s computer and often contains information about the user’s account and visit to a website.
SSL
Secure Sockets Layer,
They make sure that your web traffic is encrypted and secure so that other internet users can’t see your private data.
Transport Layer Security
They make sure that your web traffic is encrypted and secure so that other internet users can’t see your private data.
Certificate Authorities
verify that a website is legitimate and issue a certificate to tell a browser that visiting that site is safe. They are an important part of the security layer of the Internet. Without them it would be difficult to verify if a website was fraudulent or not.
Packet
is a small piece of data that is sent over the internet. Data is broken into these by the sending computer and reassembled by the receiving computer using either TCP or UDP.
