Phanerozoic Eon

541 Ma-Present. Means “visible life”

5

The Precambrian

Consists of the hadean, archean, and proterozoic eons. Make up 90% of the Earth’s history.

6
New cards

Eras of the Phanerozoic Eon

Paleozoic (Early Life, diversification of life) (541-252 MYA)
Mesozoic (Middle Life, age of reptiles) (252-66 MYA)
Cenozoic (New Life, rise of mammals) (66MYA-Present)

Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM)

A sudden warming event that occurred at the end of the Paleocene Epoch (56 MYA) and lasted around 200,000 years. It had a massive effect on life on Earth and suddenly released carbon into the atmosphere in the form of greenhouse gases. Many marine animals died due to warm waters. Still, the carbon being released during this event was only being released at a fraction of the rate at which it’s emitted today.

8
New cards

Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event (K-Pg)

A mass extinction event which wiped out about 75% of Earth’s species, including non-avian dinosaurs.

9
New cards

Paleozoic Era (Phanerozoic Eon)

Early Life, diversification of life. 541-252 MYA
