8 Characteristics of Living Things
Cell
The basic unit of life. All living things contain one or more cells.
DNA
DNA stores biological instructions for growth, development, and reproduction.
Growth
An increase in size.
Development
A change in form or function.
Metabolism
All chemical reactions occurring within an organism.
Stimulus
Something that causes a reaction in an organism.
Response
An action taken by an organism.
Homeostasis
Maintaining a stable internal environment.
Evolution
Populations change over time across generations.
Observation
Information collected using your senses or measuring tools.
Inference
A conclusion based on observations and prior knowledge.
Claim
A statement that answers a question.
Evidence
Scientific data that supports a claim.
Reasoning
An explanation of why the evidence supports the claim.
Hypothesis
A testable prediction.
Independent Variable
The factor intentionally changed by the scientist—the cause.
Dependent Variable
The factor measured by the scientist—the effect.
Control Group
The group that does not receive the treatment and provides a comparison/baseline.
Experimental Group
The group receiving the treatment.
Graph
A visual representation of data.
Positive Trend
As one variable increases, the other also increases.
Negative Trend
As one variable increases, the other decreases.
Correlation
A relationship between variables.
Causation
A relationship where one event directly causes another.
Microscope
A tool used to magnify objects too small to see clearly with the naked eye.
Total Magnification
Eyepiece × Objective lens.
Field of View
The area visible through the microscope.
Qualitative Observation
An observation describing characteristics, such as color, shape, or texture.
Quantitative Observation
An observation involving numbers, counts, or measurements.
Metric System
A universal scientific language used for consistency.
Scientific Theory
A well-supported explanation based on extensive evidence.
Scientific Law
A statement that describes a consistent relationship observed in nature.
Peer Review
A process where scientists evaluate each other’s work before publication.
