Shahadah

1st pillar, There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet

Imaan

Faith in God, personal belief, accepting the Quran is true

Islam

Submission to the will of Allah

Tawhid

Oneness of Allah - an Islamic expression on monotheism

Shirk

Polytheism, devoting worship to anything that isn't Allah

Risalah

The message of God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh: peace be upon him)

Yawn al-din

Judgment day

Akhira

Life after death, a gateway to a higher existence

Barzakh

The period between death and resurrection

Umma

Local and global Muslim community

Ibadah

Worship that includes following Islamic beliefs and practices like halal (what is permitted) and avoiding haram (prohibited).

Akhlaq

Ethics, virtue, morality, manners.

Jihad

To struggle. There are two Jihads: the greater jihad, which is to struggle against oneself, and the lesser jihad, which is to struggle against others for 1. self-defense and 2. to provide support and help for the oppressed.

Niyya

the intention one evokes in one's heart for Allah, may or may not be spoken aloud

Kufr (kaafir)

Unbelief, conceals or denies the truth by not following obligations like praying or fasting.

Halal

Rules for food and drink and matters of daily life, what's permitted

Haram

What is prohibited, sinful.

Deen

Religious way of life, Godly.

Dunya

What is Earthly, temporal. Deen and dunya must be balanced between religious obligations and worldly pursuits
