Bones of the Skull (Axial Skeleton)

Frontal sinuses

Paranasal sinuses located in the frontal bone (above eyes).

Ethmoid sinuses

Paranasal sinuses located in the ethmoid bone (between eyes).

Sphenoid sinuses

Paranasal sinuses located in the sphenoid bone (behind nose, deep).

Maxillary sinuses

Paranasal sinuses located in the maxilla (cheek area, below eyes).

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)

Key joint structure located between the mandible & temporal bone.

External acoustic meatus

The ear canal located in the temporal bone.

Foramen magnum

Large opening located in the occipital bone at the base of the skull.

Coronal suture

Suture separating the frontal bone from the parietal bone.

Sagittal suture

Suture extending along the midline superior/posterior aspect of the skull between the parietal bones.

Lambdoid suture

Suture located on the posterior view between the parietal bones and occipital bone.

Frontal bone

Anterior skull bone forming the forehead area and upper eye sockets.

Parietal bone

Bone of the axial skeleton forming the superior and lateral sides of the skull.

Temporal bone

Bone of the axial skeleton containing the external acoustic meatus and forming the TMJ with the mandible.

Occipital bone

Bone forming the posterior (back) and inferior base of the skull containing the foramen magnum.

Sphenoid bone

Bone of the axial skeleton located deep to orbit, visible in orbit, and containing sphenoid sinuses.

Ethmoid bone

Bone of the axial skeleton located between the eyes, containing ethmoid sinuses.

Lacrimal bone

Small bone located in the anterior region of the orbit/nasal region.

Nasal bone

Bone forming the bridge of the nose in the anterior view of the skull.

Zygomatic bone

Bone of the axial skeleton forming the cheek region.

Maxilla

Facial bone of the upper jaw containing maxillary sinuses (cheek area, below eyes).

Mandible

Lower jaw bone of the axial skeleton forming the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with the temporal bone.
