Chemical method of contraception
Methods that involve the use of substances such as spermicides, injections, and contraceptive pills, which do not prevent the transmission of STIs and HIV.
Mechanical/physical method of contraception
Methods involving the use of barriers between the egg cell and the sperm cell to avoid fertilization, such as condoms, IUDs, and diaphragms.
Condoms
A mechanical barrier method that prevents the transmission of STIs.
Intra uterine device (IUD) and Diaphragm (Cervical cap)
Mechanical methods of contraception that do not prevent the transmission of STIs.
Surgical method of contraception
Minor surgeries that prevent pregnancy by cutting and tying reproductive ducts, such as tuba ligation and vasectomy, but do not prevent STIs and HIV.
Tuba ligation
A surgical method where the Fallopian tubes are cut and tied to prevent pregnancy.
Vasectomy
A surgical method where the sperm ducts are cut and tied, resulting in a pregnancy rate of approximately 0.15%.
Implant
A highly effective contraceptive method with a typical failure rate of 0.05%, or less than 1 pregnancy per 100 women in a year.
LNG-IUD and Copper T IUD
Intrauterine devices with typical failure rates of 0.2% and 0.8% respectively.
Injectable
A contraceptive method with a failure rate of 6% per 100 women in a year.
Pill, Patch, and Ring
Contraceptive methods each sharing a typical failure rate of 9% per 100 women in a year.
Diaphragm
A barrier method with a typical failure rate of 12% per 100 women in a year.
Male Condom
A mechanical method with a typical failure rate of 18% per 100 women in a year.
Female Condom
A barrier method with a typical failure rate of 21% per 100 women in a year.
Withdrawal
A method of contraception with a typical failure rate of 22% per 100 women in a year.
Spermicide
A chemical method with a typical failure rate of 28% per 100 women in a year.
Fertility-Awareness Based Methods
Methods involving tracking cycles that result in a typical failure rate of 24% per 100 women in a year.
Sponge
A barrier method with failure rates of 12% for nulliparous women and 24% for parous women.
