Beaker
Used as a container; may be heated; volume markings are approximate and it is NOT used for measuring a specific volume.
Graduated Cylinder
Used for accurate measurement of liquid volume; requires estimating one uncertain digit when reading.
Erlenmeyer Flask
Used as a container where contents may be swirled to mix; may be heated; NOT used to measure a specific volume.
Volumetric Flask
Used for dissolving solids in water; holds only one precise volume and is the most accurate flask.
Buret
Used to deliver known volumes of a solution; the zero mark is located at the top.
Volumetric Pipette
Used to measure and transfer small, precise volumes; the zero mark is located at the top.
Test Tube
Used for mixing and reacting small quantities of liquids.
Bunsen Burner
Used to heat chemicals in beakers, flasks, or test tubes.
Ring Stand
Used to support lab apparatus.
Tongs
Used for picking up and holding hot items safely.
Clamp
Used to attach a piece of equipment to a ring stand.
Wire Gauze
Used to spread the heat of a flame onto the bottom of a beaker or flask.
Mortar and Pestle
Used to grind solid chemicals into a fine powder.
Evaporating Dish
Used to hold solutions over a Bunsen burner to evaporate liquid.
Hot Plate
Used for heating objects (usually an evaporating dish or beaker); turn off and unplug when finished.
Stirring Rod
Used to stir mixtures and to help pour liquids cleanly without spilling.
Pipette
Used to transfer small amounts of liquid.
Watch Glass
Used to cover liquids being heated in a beaker to prevent spattering; should not be directly heated.
Crucible & Cover
Used to heat small amounts of solids to high temperatures.
Funnel
Used to help pour liquids without spilling or to hold filter paper.
Clay Triangle
Used to hold a crucible while heating.
Well Plate
Used to perform experiments with small volumes, allowing multiple conditions to be tested simultaneously.
Graduated Cylinder Reading (1mL markings)
When markings are every 1mL, estimate the volume reading to the nearest 0.1mL (e.g., 23.9mL).
Graduated Cylinder Reading (0.1mL markings)
When markings are every 0.1mL, estimate the volume reading to the nearest 0.01mL (e.g., 6.60mL, where trailing zeros are required).
