What is said about the permeability of the plasma membrane layer?

 • is selectively permeable

2
New cards

What are the components of the phospholipid?

 1. Hydrophilic Head

→ phosphate + glycerol

 1. Hydrophobic Tail

→ saturated fatty acid and unsaturated fatty acid

3
New cards

What is important about the phosphate and glycerol in the hydrophilic head?

They are chemical groups w/ charges

→ if charged, it will react well with water

4
New cards

What is one thing all cells have?

 • A plasma membrane

5
New cards

What are the main parts of the plasma membrane and their func.?

Cholesterol

 • manages fluidity

Glycolipid + Glycoprotein

 • self-recognition (acts as a “identification tab” that allows immune system to recog. cell as a native part of the body and not an invader) = this determines our blood type

Transmembrane Protein

 • transport, communication, chemical rxns, structural func.

Peripheral protein

 • Structural, enzyme activity

6
New cards

What are 4 main func. of plasma membrane?

 1. Barrier

 2. Regulates transport

 3. Communication w/ environment

 4. Structural role

7
New cards

What are the fluid compartments in the body? What has the most fluid and which has the least?

Intracellular Fluid (ICF) = most

Extracellular Fluid

 • Intersitial Fluid

 • Plasma = least

8
New cards

What is the gap in the capillalry called and what is its purpose?

Intercellular cleft

 • tiny gap in capillary that allows for nutrients to flow past blood and surrounding tissues

What does this chart tell us?

What does this chart tell us?

The Plasma and Interstitial are mostly the same but the Protein number differs

11
New cards

Why are there more proteins in plasma than in interstitial?

 • The proteins are bigger so they can’t fit through the intracellular cleft so they tend to stay in the plasma

New cards

What does this diagram depict?

What does this diagram depict?

the ion composition of the intracellular verses extracellular compartments

 • we see that there is only a higher conc. of K+ in the ICF
