Vocabulary flashcards covering the hierarchical levels of organization of living matter in biology, from the chemical level to the biosphere.
System or apparatus
A group of organs working in a coordinated manner, such as the circulatory system.
Organism
An individual living being, such as a human, a plant, or a bacterium.
Population
A group of organisms of the same species living in the same place.
Community
A set of populations of different species coexisting in the same place.
Ecosystem
A level of organization that includes living organisms and non-living elements of the environment, such as water, air, and soil.
Biosphere
The collection of all ecosystems on Earth and all zones where life exists.
Order of biological organization
Atom → Molecule → Cell → Tissue → Organ → System or apparatus → Organism → Population → Community → Ecosystem → Biosphere.
Main organizational groupings
Chemical organization, biological organization, and ecological organization.
