What are agarics?
The typical mushroom, has a gilled cap that is distinct from the stipe
When does mycelia turn into a fruiting body?
When conditions such as high humidity and oxygen are right
What is the egg shaped bundle of mycelium called?
a button
What is the universal veil?
protective membrane that the cap tears through
What is the specking on the cap called?
scales
What is the base of the mushroom called?
volva
What is the partial veil?
protective membrane covering gills
What are the remnants of the partial veil called?
The annulus
Why are you able to cut out a clean section of the hyphae from the leading edge?
Because hyphae often outrun bacterial or yeast contaminants on the plate
What are 3 methods for decontaminating a fungal culture?
transferring clean fungal cells to a new plate
pour almost cooled agar on top of contaminated dish (traps contaminants but allows hyphae to grow)
add antibiotics to the medium when you are pouring it
What are slime molds?
not molds, not fungi. We don’t really know, show features from across taxonomic groups
What is the difference between plasmodial and cellular slime molds?
Plasmodial slime molds have a singular massive cells that keeps dividing without cell division but a cellular slime mold has individual cells that aggregate and form a slug
How do plasmodial slime molds sense and eat their food?
chemotaxis and phagocytosis (and pinocytosis by excreting enzymes)
When do plasmodial slime molds produce sporangia?
Under stress (not enough food) and exposed to light
Are plasmodia haploid or diploid?
Diploid
How does plasmodial slime mold life start?
As a single nucleated amoeba
What happens before an amoeba undergoes cell division?
It undergoes mitosis
What two forms does the plamodial slime mold’s amoeba chage back and forth betwen?
a hard, protective cyst (if environment isn’t friendly) or a flagellate (if there is enough water)
What form does Poly take if she is starving but doesn’t have light?
She forms a sclerotium
What are pseudopodia?
extensions of the cytoplasm that search for food
