"made use of our name"

DEVICE — "Our name" treats the Birling identity as property — something that can be stolen, trespassed upon, violated. Mrs Birling's outrage is entirely about ownership, with zero moral consideration for why Eva might have used the name.

EFFECT — The possessive "our" reveals the family as a brand to be protected rather than a moral unit. Mrs Birling is not angry at injustice — she is angry at a boundary violation. Priestley shows her moral compass points only toward class preservation.

BIG IDEA — Eva used the Birling name because she was desperate and pregnant. Mrs Birling's response was to reject her. Priestley places this detail carefully — the woman most obsessed with respectability causes the most unrespectable act in the play.

"I did nothing I am ashamed of"

DEVICE — The syntax is careful — she does not say "I did nothing wrong." She says nothing she is ashamed of. Priestley separates shame from wrongdoing deliberately. Mrs Birling is incapable of shame, which is worse than having done wrong.

EFFECT — By this point the audience knows exactly what she did. The line lands as the most chilling in the play precisely because it is so calm. There is no denial, no defensiveness — just a complete absence of moral feeling.

BIG IDEA — Priestley uses Mrs Birling to show that the most dangerous people are not those who do wrong and know it, but those who do wrong and feel nothing. Her certainty is the system working exactly as designed.

"girls of that class"

DEVICE — "That class" is doing enormous work — it is a category that carries disgust, dismissal and moral judgment all at once. Mrs Birling doesn't need to say more because "that class" already contains everything she thinks about Eva's worth as a human being.

EFFECT — The indefinite article "a girl" strips Eva of individuality entirely. She is not Eva Smith — she is a specimen of a type. Priestley shows that Mrs Birling's cruelty is not personal, which makes it worse. Eva died because of a category, not even a decision.

BIG IDEA — Mrs Birling is the most class-conscious character in the play and Priestley makes her the most culpable. Her rejection of Eva is the final blow — and it is delivered entirely on the basis of social position. Priestley's argument is that class itself is the weapon that killed Eva Smith.
