First Person
The point of view representing the one who is speaking.
Third Person
The point of view referring to the one who is being spoken about.
Document Header
The top right section of the document that includes the student's last name and the page number.
Course Heading
The top left section on the first page containing the student's first and last name, Professor or Mrs. Murphy, ENGL1301, and the spelled-out date.
Thesis Statement Location
The final sentence of the introductory paragraph.
Outline Length Requirement
A document component that must not exceed the first page of the document.
Outline Sentence Rule
The requirement that the thesis statement is the only complete sentence allowed on the outline.
Standard Essay Structure
A five-paragraph format consisting of one introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and one conclusion paragraph.
Class Paragraph Standard
A unit of writing consisting of five to seven sentences.
Restricted Conclusion Transition
The phrase "in conclusion", which is overused and not permitted in the conclusion paragraph.
Informal Writing Phrase
The phrase "a lot of", which is considered informal and must be replaced in formal academic writing.
Document Formatting Rules
Formatting standards requiring the entire document to be double-spaced in Times New Roman, 12 font.
Descriptive Essay Length
An assignment length of 500 words to 750 words, not counting the outline, title, or works cited page.
Sensory Detail Requirement
A rule for the descriptive essay requiring the use of at least three of the five senses spread across the body paragraphs.
Shift in Person
An error caused by changing points of view mid-essay, such as starting in the first person and switching to third person.
Prewriting
The first stage of the seven-step writing process, involving brainstorming, identifying the audience, checking the tone, and warming up to write.
