Fixed Partial Denture (FPD)
A dental prosthesis attached to teeth/implants that cannot be removed by the patient.
FPD Retainer Crown
The part of a fixed partial denture that unites the abutment to the restoration.
FPD Connector
The portion of a fixed partial denture that unites the retainer and pontic.
FPD Pontic
An artificial tooth that replaces a missing natural tooth on a fixed partial denture.
FPD Abutment
A tooth or root that serves to support and retain a prosthesis.
Ante's Law
Root surface area of abutments must equal or exceed that of replaced teeth.
Optimal Crown-to-Root Ratio
2:3 optimal, with 1:1 being the maximum acceptable ratio for an abutment.
Ideal Root Morphology for Abutments
Roots broader labiolingually than mesiodistally with widely separated roots.
Connector Dimension Effect on Flexure
Doubling connector height while maintaining width increases stability 8-fold.

Number One Reason for FPD Remake
Lack of clearance or improper tooth reduction during preparation.
Siebert Class 1 Ridge Deformity
Faciolingual loss of tissue width with normal ridge height.
Siebert Class 2 Ridge Deformity
Loss of ridge height with normal ridge width.
Siebert Class 3 Ridge Deformity
Combination loss of both ridge height and tissue width.
Forbidden Pontic Design
Saddle (lap) pontic design due to poor cleanability and tissue inflammation.

Pier Abutment
An intermediate natural tooth or implant located between terminal abutments.
Non-Rigid Connector Location on Pier Abutment
Distal side of the middle retainer to prevent unseating during mesial movement.
Cantilever FPD Design Rule
Generally replaces one missing tooth and requires at least two abutments.
Effect of Taper on Retention
As tooth preparation taper increases, retention decreases.
