External Respiration
Gas exchange between the lungs and the blood

Inhaled O2 moves from the alveoli into pulmonary capillaries, carbon dioxide moves from pulmonary capillaries into alveoli to be exhaled
Internal Respiration
Gas exchange between the blood and the tissues

Oxygen leaves systemic capillaries to enter tissue cells, carbon dioxide leaves tissue cells and enters systemic capillaries
Mediastinum
Central compartment of the thoracic cavity between the lungs. Contains heart, great vessels, trachea and esophagus
Bronchi
The large airways that break off of the trachea into two tube structures
Hilum
Root of lungs where bronchi, pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins, lymphatics and nerves enter and exit
