Information technology

Computer based tool that people use to work with information and support an organization’s information and information processing needs.

Information systems

Collects, processes, stores, analyzes and disseminates information for a specific purpose.

Digital transformation

The business strategy that leverages IT to dramatically improve employee, customer, and business partner relationships.

Computer Based Information Systems (CBIS)

An information system that uses computer technology to perform some or all of its intended tasks.

Data

Elementary description of things, events, activities and transactions that are recorded, classified, and stored, but are not organized to convey any specific meaning.

Information

Data that have been organized so that they have meaning and value to the recipient.

Knowledge

Data and/or information that have been organized and processed to convey understanding, experience, accumulated learning, and expertise as they apply to current business problems.

Functional Area information systems (FAIS)

Systems that address the specific needs of different departments or functional areas within an organization.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems

Systems that provide communication among functional area IS’s through an integrated database.

Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)

Systems that support the monitoring, collection, storage, processing of data from the organization's day-to-day operations for basic business transactions.
