Myoglobin (Mb) Binding Curve
A hyperbolic curve that reflects a single binding site and no cooperativity.
Hemoglobin (Hb) Binding Curve
A sigmoidal curve that reflects multiple binding sites and cooperativity.
What can cause a left shift?
pH increase, oxygen affinity increase
Decrease in CO2, H+, ionic bonds, and 2,3BPG
What state favors the left shift?
R state
What causes a right shift?
pH decrease, oxygen affinity decrease
Increase in CO2, increase in H+, increase in 2,3 BPG
What state does the right shift favor?
T state
P50
Pressure of oxygen in blood where hemoglobin is 50% saturated with oxygen.
P50 shifts?
Lower p50 = left shift
Higher p50 = right shift
Low pO2 on Dissociation Chart
Represents the physiological conditions found in tissue.
High pO2 on Dissociation Chart
Represents the physiological conditions found in the lungs.
