What are cations? What elements typically form cations?

Cations are positively charged ions. Metals typically form cations.

2

What are anions? What elements typically form anions?

Anions are negatively charged ions. Non-metals typically form anions.

Explain how salt water conducts electricity while just plain water does not conduct electricity?

Salt water conducts electricity because it is an electrolyte solution, so electricity is sent through the solution, which means that cations move to the side, where electricity comes in. But, plain water does not conduct electricity, because it has anions, and they move to the side where there aren’t electrons.

What patterns did you observe in the chemical formula of “Common Salt” in the table?

They all shared similar elements such as Na, Cl, and Li.

How are metals similar to sweaters? How are non-metals similar to the balloon? Explain using charges?

Metals are similar to sweaters because they both lose electrons. Non-metals are similar to the balloon because they both gain electrons.

What part of the atom decides the charge of an element?

The outer part of the nucleus decides the charge of an element (basically the electrons).
