Vocabulary flashcards covering the phases of matter, phase changes, mixtures, solutions, and measurement tools based on Grade 5 Science Standard 5.7.
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
Mass
The amount of matter in an object, which can be measured using an instrument such as a triple-beam balance.
Volume
The amount of space an object or substance occupies.
Solid
A phase of matter that has both a definite shape and a definite volume, with tightly packed particles.
Liquid
A phase of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape, assumes the shape of its container, and flows easily.
Gas
A phase of matter that has no definite shape and no definite volume, whose particles move rapidly and spread far apart.
Melting
The phase change of matter from a solid to a liquid caused by the addition of heat energy.
Freezing
The phase change of matter from a liquid to a solid caused by the removal of heat energy (cooling).
Evaporation
The phase change of matter from a liquid to a gas caused by the addition of heat energy.
Condensation
The phase change of matter from a gas to a liquid caused by the removal of heat energy (cooling).
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances (such as sand and iron filings, or salsa) that retain their physical properties and can be physically separated.
Solution
A specific type of mixture, such as lemonade or chocolate milk, where substances are blended or dissolved evenly throughout.
Effect of Temperature on Particle Motion
When temperature and thermal energy increase, particles move faster and spread farther apart; when temperature decreases, particles move slower.
Triple-Beam Balance
A laboratory instrument used to measure the mass of an object.
Ruler
A measurement tool used to measure linear dimensions (length, width, and height) to determine the volume of a solid object.
