negative process
recruitment is a positive process (aimed at attracting as many qualified applicants as possible), selection is fundamentally a negative process
The Selection Process & Steps
Initial screening w/ application forms
selection tools
final interviews
Application forms
Candidates complete application forms providing detailed background information on their education, prior work record, and skills.
Purpose
Employers use these to evaluate substantive qualifications,
gauge career progress/growth,
determine work stability,
and predict potential job success.
Selection Tools & Testing
Employers use objective tools—
such as employment tests,
background investigations,
physical exams—
to screen out unqualified individuals and pinpoint viable candidates
Selection tools provide:
Reliability and Validity
Reliability
Ensures that a test is consistent and yields reliable scores when a person takes alternate forms of the test or takes it on different occasions.
Validity
Ensures that the test is actually measuring what it is supposed to measure (e.g., criterion validity).
Final Interviews
After testing and background checks, the supervisor (and potentially other managers) conduct final interviews to decide who should receive the formal job offer.
