Cell Arrangements
The grouping of individual cells.
Single
An arrangement consisting of one cell.
diplo-
A prefix indicating pairs of two cells, produced by division in one plane (e.g., Diplococci, Diplobacilli).
strepto-
A prefix indicating chains of cells, produced by division in one plane (e.g., Streptococci, Streptobacilli).
Tetrad
An arrangement of cocci arranged in squares of 4, produced by division in two planes.
Sarcina
An arrangement of cocci arranged in cubes of 8, produced by division in three planes.
Staphylo-
A prefix indicating clusters or clumps of cells (e.g., Staphlococci), produced by division in random planes.
Division in one plane
A pattern of cell division that produces either a diplo or strepto arrangement.
Division in two planes
A pattern of cell division that produces a tetrad arrangement.
Division in three planes
A pattern of cell division that produces a sarcina arrangement.
Division in random planes
A pattern of cell division that produces a staphylococcus arrangement of clusters or clumps.
