Dionysus

-God of wine, theater, vegetation, fertility, Ekstasis, Entheos

-attributes: grapes, wine, thyrsus(pinecone with a stick)

-accompined by Maenads (women dancing)

the war (connected to Bacchae)

-one side said they have a strong navy from the gods and should use it

-the other side said what would we do if we were the small island

-might vs. right

-might won and the men were killed and the women & children were put into slavery

Religion through Dionysus

-Ekstasis, means out of normal

-through wine, music, and dance you become Entheos, finding the inner god in your body(it’s a religious mission)

myth of Dionysus

-Zues and Semete are his parents

-Hera finds out and burns Semete, Zues sees this and cuts open his thigh and puts Dionysus there until he’s born

Treatment towards Dionysus

-Daughters of the king didn’t believe in him and were punished

-He disguises himself as one of his priest and takes the boat, but on the boat they try to rob him and he turns them into dolphins and their boat had branches and grapes growing out of them

Teireisias, friend of Cadmus(Dionysus grandfather/former king)

-Can’t see but can see the future, 2 different stories

-pokes two snakes mating and gets turned into a women for 10 years, after she goes back and does the same thing and turned back into a man. The gods were arguing over gender and intimacy and decided to ask him and he says the women. One case is the gods made him blind and felt bad so gave him the gift of prophecy and long life, the other is Hera made him blind.

-he saw Athena bathing and made him blind, then felt bad and gave him the gift of prophecy.

Bacchae(backstory)

-Dionysus opens the play as one of his priest

-Dionysus goes to his mother’s hometown and sees people talking bad about her

-Pentheus(cousin) took the thrown as Cadmus(grandfather) stepped down

Bacchae(play)

-Pentheus sends says into the woods to look at the women

-Dionysus turns into one of Pentheus priest and warns him of Dionysus power

-Pentheus is mad and throws him out but says they should go see Dionysus but Pentheus would have to dress as a women

-Dionysus leads him into the woods toward the Maenads, they sees him and tears him apart, his aunt and mother

-his mother puts his head on a stick thinking its a thysus

-Cadmus says the gods should be exempt from human passion, saying the gods should be better than mortals

Orpheus

-best musical of all time

-he can enchant people, animals, plants, and rocks

-he’s an argument & out sings sirens

Orpheus (mortal)

-first mortal to find a religion, and it’s a mystery

-orpheusim

Orpheusim

-time (Cronos) makes a god called Phones but in an egg, and creates everything

-zues eats the egg of phones and becomes the second creator

-Dionysus was killed by Titans & zues kills them all from their ashes mortals rose

-Dionysus soul was saved & came back to life

-rules: Vegetarian, can’t eat beans, can’t wear wool, abstain from sex

Soma Sema

Pythagoros & Orpheusim

-He was a mathematician and left to a town called Cruton

-philosopher that was into biomechanics, interested in running/ wind

-Pythagoras would help olympic athletes, making them win

Reincarnation through Orpheusim

-each soul comes back in different bodies, and continue until you break the cycle

initiated into orpheusim

-you get to drink from the river of memory, where you get to remember everything

Orpheus & Euridike

-He marries her and she gets bit by a snake and dies

-He goes down to hades and asks for his wife back, he then sings to hades and he tells him to take her but not to turn around on earth

-he lives as a hermit(being alone) after his wife death again, she turmed around

Orpheus death

-his head ends up at Delos, his head almost got bit by a snake but apollo turned the snake to stone. Orpheus then went back to Hades

-version 1: Zues finds out he’s talking about hades and strikes him down with a lightning bolt

-version 2: He’s telling men to not engage with women, they then tear him a part for saying that

-The trees and people mourn him
