what are some predictors/parameters for breeding in reptiles and amphibians (including seasonal, continuous examples)?

amphibians

  • rainfall is strong stimulus for breeding in temperate and tropical climate zones

  • most in temperate zone are highly seasonal in timing of breeding, most breed in late winter/early spring when rainfall is more predictable (some in mid-summer and others in fall)

  • tropical species mostly breed in rainy season, but some species in tropical areas without great changes in temperature or rainfall throughout seasons breed year-round

reptiles

  • events leading up to mating include maturation of gonads, development of secondary sexual structures, courtship
