Matter
Anything with mass and volume
Chemistry
Study of properties of matter and how they change
Substance
A single kind of matter that is pure and made up of a specific set of properties
Physical properties
A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance
Chemical properties
A characteristic of a pure substance that describes it’s ability to change into different substances
Element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means
Atom
The basic particle from which all elements are made of
Chemical bond
Force of attraction between 2 atoms
Molecule
Groups of two or more atoms
Compound
A pure substance that is made of two or more elements chemically bonded in a set ratio
Chemical formula
Shows the elements in the compound and the ratio of atoms
Mixture
Made of two or more substances not chemically combined
Heterogenous mixture
Can see the different parts
Homogenous mixture
Mixed so evenly you can’t see the different parts
Solution
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances
Science
The investigation and exploration of natural events and of the new information and taking note of what occurs
Observation
the act of using one or more of your senses to gather information and taking note of what occurs
Inference
A logical explanation of an observation that is drawn from prior knowledge or experience
Hypothesis
An educated guess that can be used to explain an observation which can be proven by tests
Technology
The practical use of scientific knowledge especially for industrial or commercial use
Scientific theory
An explanation of events based off of prior knowledge
Scientific law
A law/rule that describes a consistent pattern in nature
Vaporization
The change from liquid to gas
Evaporation
Vaporization that takes place on the surface of a liquid
Sublimation
Occurs when the surface particles of a solid gain enough energy that they form a gas
Chemical change
A change in matter that produces one or more new substances
Law of conservation of mass
The fact that matter is not created or destroyed in any chemical or physical change
Thermal energy
The total energy of all the particles in an object
Solid
Has a definite shape and a definite volume
Crystalline solid
Solids that are made up of crystals formed by regular, repeating patterns
Amorphous solid
A solid made up of particles that are arranged in an irregular pattern
Liquid
Has a definite volume but no shape of it’s own
Fluid
A substance that flows
Surface tension
The result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid bringing the molecules closer together
Viscosity
A liquids resistance to flowing depending on the size and shape of it’s particles and the attraction between particles
Gas
A fluid that can change volume very easily
